EGRETS, OTTERS AND MORE Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Bring your binoculars and meet trip leader Gary Friedrichsen at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata for easy-to-walk trails, a beautiful view of Humboldt Bay, and a diverse range of overwintering birds, including ducks, shorebirds, herons, and egrets, raptors, and songbirds. Keep an eye out for otters and otter signs as they frequent the marsh ponds.

EUREKA WATERFRONT BIRD TOUR Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour along the Eureka Waterfront Trail on Sunday, Feb. 18 from 9 to 11 a.m., with leader Ralph Bucher. This relatively urban trail offers the potential to observe species abundance and diversity compared to many more remote locations. Keep an eye and ear out for cormorants, loons, grebes, and even otters diving for their meals in the bay alongside the trail. This walk is on a flat, paved trail that is wheelchair accessible. MCKINLEYVILLE INCORPORATION MEETING The McKinleyville Incorporation Exploration Subcommittee will hold an earlier than-usual meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the McKinleyville Community Services District Conference Room at 1656 Sutter Rd. in McKinleyville. The earlier meeting time will allow the subcommittee to hear a presentation from County Economic Development Director Scott Adair on potential funds the community can pursue to fund an initial feasibility study on incorporating McKinleyville.
