Participatory budgeting brainstorming session set

VALLEY WEST – CUNA (Comunidad Unida del Norte de Arcata/Community United North Arcata), a grassroots project to build a better represented Valley West, has begun round two of its Participatory Budget Process.

Come let your voices be heard and deepen democracy as we engage with this community-driven design where residents decide how to spend $25,000 allocated by the City of Arcata for beautification and community connectivity for the Valley West/North Arcata community.

What improvements do you want to see? Invite Valley West residents to come share your ideas!

A brainstorming session takes place Thursday, June 8 at 6 p.m. at the Arcata Chamber of Commerce Humboldt Welcome Center, 1635 Heindon Rd. Food and beverages will be provided.

Last year, the City Council allocated $15,000 towards beautification and community connectivity projects and worked with CUNA to identify top priorities within the Valley West neighborhood. CUNA held a participatory budgeting process to select projects that community members felt could have the greatest impact.

Community-selected projects includes fruit trees for Valley West Park, a picnic area at the Valley West basketball court, two mural projects, dance classes, youth theater classes and teen meet-ups.

CUNA is a project of Playhouse Arts. In partnership with the City of Arcata, CUNA conducts community gatherings, collaborations with area businesses, meetings, cleanups, participatory budgeting and future planning for Valley West and North Arcata.
